Red Alder
Red Alder is very similar to the Scandinavian alder, it is a sapwood with yellowish/red sapwood, i.e. no visible transition between splinter and core. The overall pattern is reminiscent of birch. Immediately after felling, the wood is brick red, but the color fades quickly. Becomes darker and more reddish with age. Visible annual rings.
Red Alder is used for clogs, health sandals, hat molds, blind wood, shavings for smoking (herring and eel), models and in the past for water pipes and pump pipes. Woodworkers love alder wood.
